First Study

Deceptacon

Deceptacon by Le Tigre is a fusion of punk, electrionic, and femisit energy. It stands as an iconic track in the dance-punk and electroclash genres. It was the opening song of Le Tigre's 1999 debut self titled album. The track features a catchy beat, lo-fi synth textures and a raw vocal track that echos a raw urgancy of political and cultural resistance. Le Tigre was formed by Kathleen Hanna, Johanna Fateman, and Sadie Benning. To mimic the bass sound of the original I used a Boss-ME50B digital pedal board and utilised its Muff Fuzz Drive paired with the Octave Down Tone and Natural Compressor. I think my performance here is good however I am going to spend more time fine tuning my bass tone to get it closer to the original.

Man In The Box

One of the most popular songs of the early 1990s and an iconic track from the grunge movement, Alice In Chains' single Man In The Box has stood the test of time with it's down-tuned, sludgy guitar riffs, talk box effects, and atmospheric vocal harmonies. Layne Staley (Vocalist) delivers the lyrics with intensisty while Jerry Cantrell (Gutarist) uses a talk box to give the track a eerie, distinctive quality. Man In The Box was released in 1990 and featured on their debut album Facelift. It was pivotal in bringing Alice In Chains to the mainstream as it earned a grammy nomination and was heavly featured on MTV. Alice In Chains was co-founded by Layne Staley, and Jerry Cantrell. To mimic the tone of the bass in the original track I boosted the low end frequency slightly and tuned my bass a half-step down from standard tuning. My performance of this song is good however I think in the future I could add more to the chorus to make it sound closer to the original song.

I Got You (I Feel Good)

I Got You (I Feel Good) By James Brown is one of the most iconic, if not the most iconic soul and funk track ever recorded. It captures the high energy that defined James Brown's groundbreaking style. After being released in 1966 the song went on to become James Brown's highest-charting single. It remains instantly recognizable with it's driving rhythm and James Brown's electrifying vocal performance which is personified in the songs opening lyrics "Wow! I feel good". The song became a cultural anthem that embodied confidence, celebration, and the power of music. To mimic the sound of this track I used a clean tone and adjusted my Ibanez to sound as close to a precision bass as possible. I think I pulled off the performance of this song well however I think with more practice playing the song over and over I could play the bass line a bit more relaxed. This would play into the songs main theme of confidence and feeling good.

Good Vibrations

Good Vibrations by The Beach Boys is an innovative pop song from 1967. written by Brian Wilson and Mike Love, it broke new ground by departing from the traditional verse-chrous format. Good Vibrations unfolds into distinctive sections, each with its own textures and moods. The lyrics of the song capture a sense of romantic idealism and youthful wonder with the lyrics "I'm pickin' up good vibrations" referring to a spiritual or emotional energy. The song became a commerical success and established Brian Wilson's reputation as a studio innovator. To mimic the sound for this I did exactly the same as what is did for I Feel Good, a clean bass tone and with my bass adjusted to sound like a precision bass. I gave a good performance here however as I said with "I Got You (I Feel Good)" I think with more practice of playing the song over and over again I could play it a lot more relaxed which would improve the overall performance.

Spiders

piders by System Of A Down featured on their debut self-titled album in 1998. it showcases the band's fusion of middle eastern melodies and metal influences. It is slower than many of their other tracks and this allows it to build tension along with the haunting vocals. This tension is then subverted by the dynamic shift of the chorus creating a great sense of unpredictablity. The songs lyrics explore themes of control and existential unease. This helped to establish System Of A Down's reputation for addressing dark political themes in their music. System Of A Down was formed by Serj Tankian, Daron Malakian,Shavo Odadjian, and John Dolmayan. For this track I had to tune down Drop C and I used a clean bass tone with the high end frequency slighlty boosted. Overall I think I gave a good performance here however with this song being so stripped back in the verses and heavily relying on the bassline, it is a very difficult so to play to a backing track where there is zero room for error. I could play this song a lot better with a live band however I will continue to practice with the backing track for now as it will help me to improve as a musician.
